Rise of the Rabbis
Module 4: The Development of the Mishnah
In this module, Rabbi Micha’el Rosenberg, Ph.D., introduces the primary genres and works of rabbinic literature and
considers their influence on later Judaism. Our sample is from the first few minutes of Rabbi Rosenberg’s lecture.
Rise of the Rabbis
Module 6: Midrash
In this module, Rabbi Jane Kanarek, Ph.D., explores a central genre of rabbinic literature: midrash (biblical interpretation). Rabbi Kanarek demonstrates how midrash enables the rabbis to be imaginative, daring, and sophisticated as they remake the TaNaKh (Hebrew Bible) into a living document, a book of complex narratives and of rich rabbinic law. Our sample is from the opening of Rabbi Kanarek’s lecture.
Journey Through the Bible
Sample from Module 1: Methods of Interpreting the Bible
In Journey through the Bible, Professor Brettler invites the learner to enter the text using the tools of the historical-critical method of biblical scholarship. He encourages learners to consider how the biblical text was “read” in its original context; to appreciate the profound issues its authors were grappling with, and, in the process, to find new ways of relating to the Bible today.
